Hughes stars as Bulls edge Warriors

Basketball Betting Lines

11/22/2008 - Oakland, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Larry Hughes burned his old team for 26 points, getting the start in place of an injured Luol Deng and the Chicago Bulls pulled out a 115-110 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Derrick Rose scored 23 of his 25 points in the second half and Drew Gooden notched a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds for the Bulls, who improved to 1-2 on a brutal seven-game road swing.

Each member of Chicago's starting lineup finished in double figures as the Bulls shot 51.1 percent (45-of-88) from the floor, connected on 10-of-23 three-point attempts and were nearly perfect from the line making 15-of-16 tries.

"Guys stepped up and we're a little shorthanded. Derrick (Rose) had a tremendous second half and really took control of the game," Bulls head coach Vinny Del Negro said.

Stephen Jackson poured in a game-high 32 points and dished out six assists for the Warriors, who made a significant personnel move just hours before the game sending disgruntled forward Al Harrington to the New York Knicks for high-scoring guard Jamal Crawford.

Corey Maggette scored 24 and grabbed seven rebounds while Andris Biedrins registered a double-double with 23 points and 10 boards as Golden State had its modest, albeit season-high, two-game winning streak halted.

A pair of free throws from Anthony Randolph with 1:49 remaining made it a one possession game with the Warriors trailing 109-106 but Rose came back and connected on a mid-range, bank shot.

Hughes' theft gave Chicago a chance to extend the lead but Randolph's outstretched palm swatted away Hughes' offering on the other end and Maggette came back to sink a pair of free throws to climb within three once again.

Thabo Sefolosha was off the mark on a three-point attempt but Gooden snagged the rebound. Ben Gordon, though, was called for an offensive foul and Golden State was given one last chance inside of 30 seconds.

The Warriors couldn't find an open look for a three and Randolph's uncontested drive to the hoop with 12 seconds left clanked off the rim. The Bulls went 4- for-4 from the line down the stretch to seal the victory.

"I thought we played hard but the Bulls did a good job -- matched up with us in the beginning of the game," Golden State head coach Don Nelson said. Rose showed why he's the number one pick in the draft -- second half, he put on a show."

Golden State held a slim 28-27 lead after one quarter and grew that lead by one at halftime, holding a 59-57 advantage.

Chicago started the second half with a 10-1 run to gain a seven-point lead but at the midway point of the third, a Jackson jumper tied the game at 70-70. The teams traded the lead several times winding down the quarter with the Warriors coming out with an 87-85 lead.

Golden State held its lead until Hughes started a 14-5 run by draining a three-ball. Lindsey Hunter ended the sprint with a three of his own to give the Bulls a 101-95 lead entering the final stretch of the game.

Game Notes

The two teams split the home-and-home season series a year ago with both teams winning on the road. Harrington, meanwhile, has averaged 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds in five games for the Warriors this season but has been on the sidelines with a strained lower back. Sefolosha had 12 points and Gordon 13 for the Bulls...Randolph had 10 points, nine rebounds and four blocks off the bench for Golden State...Hunter had 10 points off the bench for Chicago...Biedrins has 11 double-double efforts in the Warriors' first 12 games.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
