Flames, Bruins aim to shake up playoff picture in afternoon battle

Hockey Betting Lines

03/27/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - An interconference matchup with postseason implications is on tap today in Boston, as the Bruins welcome the Calgary Flames for a matinee at TD Garden.

Boston enters Saturday holding onto the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. However, Atlanta, which will visit Carolina tonight, is just two points behind the Bruins.

Meanwhile, Calgary is currently outside of the West postseason picture, sitting six points behind Detroit for the conference's final playoff spot.

Boston had won two straight, including a key regulation win over the Thrashers on Tuesday, but the Bruins stumbled Thursday in a 5-3 loss to visiting Tampa Bay. Steven Stamkos and Paul Szczechura each tallied twice to lift the Lightning to the win and allow Tampa to pull within six points of Boston in the East standings.

Zdeno Chara, Mark Recchi and Johnny Boychuk scored for the Bruins, who are also two points behind Philadelphia in the conference race.

"We didn't have a good start tonight. The opportunities we gave them they capitalized on," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien.

Tuukka Rask, who has started the last five games for Boston, stopped only 13- of-18 shots in defeat. Tim Thomas -- last year's Vezina winner as the league's top goalie -- hasn't started since March 15, but could get the call today.

The Bruins, who are just 15-15-6 as the host this year, are playing the middle test of a three-game homestand this afternoon. Boston will complete the residency Monday against Buffalo.

The Flames have dropped two of their last three tests and didn't help their playoff chances at all in Thursday's regulation loss against the New York Islanders. Bruno Gervais scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to lift the host Islanders to the 3-2 decision at Nassau Coliseum.

"This one, we feel, got away from us," said Calgary's Jarome Iginla. "And it hurts, it's a tough one, but nobody's giving up."

Nigel Dawes and Eric Nystrom had the goals for the Flames, who opened a three- game road trip that will end Sunday in Washington. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed all three goals on 22 shots in the loss.

Calgary has a decent 18-12-6 road record this year, but has dropped two straight and three of its last four as the visitor.

Today's battle in Boston marks the lone regular-season meeting between these clubs. Calgary beat the Bruins at the Saddledome last year and has won three of the last four encounters overall. However, the Flames have been defeated in three of four and four of their last six trips to Beantown.
